I’m a big fan of products that are able to incorporate cultural trends into their roadmap in ways that are meaningful to users and drive engagement. One of my favorite social chat products, GroupMe, has been on a roll lately. In their last several updates they’ve brought emoji, animated gif, and meme support to their mobile and web clients. Silly and inane fluff, right?
Actually, as the Google Trends chart below suggests, GroupMe has their finger on the zeitgeist of socially aware, connected mobile users. It’s a display of savvy that delights their users and encourages increased engagement / activity by riding the coattails of what Andrew Chen calls “market pull.” It’s a lesson in product acumen that we would all be well to learn from. Cheers GroupMe for a game well played.
