This is the blog of Brooks Andrus. Here, at irregular intervals, you may find digital noise centered around the activities of an early 21st century technologist. I work for TechSmith Corporation, but this web space and the views found on it are entirely my own.

I wrote about another aspects of computers and eduction here:
 http://patapata.sourceforge.net/WhyEducationalTechnologyHasFailedSchools.html
"Ultimately, educational technology's greatest value is in supporting" learning on demand" based on interest or need which is at the opposite end of the spectrum compared to "learning just in case" based on someone else's demand. Compulsory schools don't usually traffic in "learning on demand", for the most part leaving that kind of activity to libraries or museums or the home or business or the "real world". In order for compulsory schools to make use of the best of educational technology and what is has to offer, schools themselves must change."

I liked this recent essay by John Creighton on a "21st century institutions":
 http://johncr8on.com/projects/21st-century-institutions/
"Indeed, people have come to expect options and choices. The idea of “one size fits all” is considered as old as the steam engine train. And, people’s growing expectations are not ending with choice. Increasingly, people expect to design, produce and manage their own experiences. They will gravitate toward institutions that help them do these things."

And RSA Animate has created some neat animations of talk on YouTube, with one on a "21st century enlightenment".

Thanks for participating in the growing gift economy by making available an Automator application to toggle hidden files (how I found your blog). Teaching more people how to live happily in a gift economy instead of create a lot of artificial scarcity is another thing education might be good for. :-)
