My POV as a new Jing Pro purchaser.

Although Jing seems very simple on the site, I have had nothing but problems with it since purchasing the Pro version at 9:30pm. It is now 3:11am and I'm pretty bummed. No luck ! I NEED help. First my wants.

What I want :
1. To be able to host my video's on my own server.
2. To be able to place videos (from a video camera) to my blog as you do on yours.

What my problems are :
1. I guess I can't use Jing to FTP any of my personal video's to my server, and if so how do I do it ?
2. When I just create a "Jing" screencast and upload it, it's blank, white, nothing, nada, when I click the "visual" tab in wordpress, I see a flash box/container ? but that's it. I'm so FRUSTRATED right now.
As someone who is relitively fluent on the mac, I have to say, I've never had so much trouble troubleshooting something. I can't find anything online about this, I'm pretty much ready to get a refund and just say $%@! it.

Is Jing responsible for the actual PLAYER ?, if so, why do you use Kamini ?

Please help.

I'm using wordpress 2.7 and the "Thesis" theme. I have a powerbook dual 2.4 with 4 gigs running tiger.

Please email me direct or call 808-268-8929

alright thanks

@William - sorry for the confusion. The video tutorial was based on a version of Jing that had a bug in it. This bug caused the lower "video" text field to not work (essentially Jing was only returning the code from the "image" field). A subsequent update fixed this issue. However it requires that you add the URL code template back to the "video" field. Here's what my current Jing URL templates looks like:

http://www.brooksandrus.com/jing2/index.php?name=video_code.png&width=482&height=348

Hopefully that will help some of those who are being confused by the video.

@William - it looks like your link template is missing brackets:

width=width and height=height

When it should be setting:

width=[width] and height=[height]

I'm a little bit confused by your question. Are you asking how to create embed code templates rather than link templates?

That's fantastic, Brooks! Oddly, it works perfectly on my Mac... but Jing is not returning the share link after uploading to FTP on my Windows machine. (And, for some reason, there's no longer a 'Custom Share Code' option in Jing for Windows.) So, I still have to fill in the file name and dimensions manually to share the link. :(

I've gotten my act together and merged the php templates so that a single php file can serve MPEG4-AVC and SWF video files as well as PNG image files. As an added bonus when you view source on the rendered page in the browser it's now formatted nicely (pretty print).

So the zip (linked below) now includes the following files:

- expressInstall.swf
- index.php
- jingloader.swf
- overlayplayer.swf
- swfobject.js
- jing_ftp_settings.txt

Everything except for the txt file gets uploaded to your server.

The txt file gives examples of the ftp server settings I use on my own site. It also provides a URL (link) template and embed code templates for MPEG4-AVC and SWF playback in Flash Player.

Please let me know if there are issues and feel free to provide improvements (it would be great to have an ASP.NET / JSP / Python / Ruby, etc template).

Download files here:

PERFECT :)

Works great... I guess when i sign up for PRO I'll need to use the index.php instead of jingswviewer.php.

Thanks so much.. Love the helpful tips as well :)

@Jon - the example shown above was intended for MPEG4-AVC files (.mp4). For SWF files you're going to need to use a different set of template files:

http://www.brooksandrus.com/resources/jing_complete_template.zip

Your URL template will look something like this:

http://www.brooksandrus.com/jing2/jingswfviewer.php?name=[filename]&width=[width]&height=[height]&autostart=false

You can toggle the autostart variable to select between click-to-play and immediate playback.

f you're creating thumbnails and uploading them to your server (manual process that Jing doesn't do for you) you can add a "thumb" variable with the url to frame that will be displayed in the click-to-play start screen.

A URL template with a thumbnail would look something like this:

http://www.brooksandrus.com/jing2/jingswfviewer.php?name=[filename]&width=[width]&height=[height]&autostart=false&thumb=someimage.png

So get the right template files up on your server and it looks like you'll be good to go.

Question: Do you happen to know what might be causing the final link/page not to load?

I see the "Loading" screen but then it's nothing but BLACK SCREEN (when trying to view a video).

Here's a sample link:
