Jing Pro + FTP: A Complete Solution

Back when Jing was born and was all-SWF-all-the-time, I did a little tutorial and provided a few files that allowed you to easily setup up your own server that returned html links with the video embedded and Flash Player detection turned on. Now that Jing’s gone pro that solution won’t work with MPEG4-AVC files, so I dropped everything and reached back into my bag of tricks to produce a new template just for those tasty MP4 files (includes a video player, php page and some Flash detection files). Head on over to the Jing blog to grab the requisite files and view the tutorial, or just chill and watch it here.

  1. Damn, you’ve been a busy bee!

Question: Do you happen to know what might be causing the final link/page not to load?

I see the “Loading” screen but then it’s nothing but BLACK SCREEN (when trying to view a video).

    Here’s a sample link:
    http://share.commarketing.com/index.php?name=2009-01-21_1611.swf&autostart=true&width=799&height=462

@Jon – the example shown above was intended for MPEG4-AVC files (.mp4). For SWF files you’re going to need to use a different set of template files:

    http://www.brooksandrus.com/resources/jing_complete_template.zip

Your URL template will look something like this:

    http://www.brooksandrus.com/jing2/jingswfviewer.php?name=filename&width=width&height=height&autostart=false

You can toggle the autostart variable to select between click-to-play and immediate playback.

f you’re creating thumbnails and uploading them to your server (manual process that Jing doesn’t do for you) you can add a “thumb” variable with the url to frame that will be displayed in the click-to-play start screen.

A URL template with a thumbnail would look something like this:

    http://www.brooksandrus.com/jing2/jingswfviewer.php?name=filename&width=width&height=height&autostart=false&thumb=someimage.png

So get the right template files up on your server and it looks like you’ll be good to go.

    PERFECT :)

Works great… I guess when i sign up for PRO I’ll need to use the index.php instead of jingswviewer.php.

Thanks so much.. Love the helpful tips as well :)

  5. Brooks says:

I’ve gotten my act together and merged the php templates so that a single php file can serve MPEG4-AVC and SWF video files as well as PNG image files. As an added bonus when you view source on the rendered page in the browser it’s now formatted nicely (pretty print).

So the zip (linked below) now includes the following files:

    - expressInstall.swf
    - index.php
    - jingloader.swf
    - overlayplayer.swf
    - swfobject.js
    - jing_ftp_settings.txt

Everything except for the txt file gets uploaded to your server.

The txt file gives examples of the ftp server settings I use on my own site. It also provides a URL (link) template and embed code templates for MPEG4-AVC and SWF playback in Flash Player.

Please let me know if there are issues and feel free to provide improvements (it would be great to have an ASP.NET / JSP / Python / Ruby, etc template).

That’s fantastic, Brooks! Oddly, it works perfectly on my Mac… but Jing is not returning the share link after uploading to FTP on my Windows machine. (And, for some reason, there’s no longer a ‘Custom Share Code’ option in Jing for Windows.) So, I still have to fill in the file name and dimensions manually to share the link. :(

  7. Brooks says:

@Jason – hmm…I’m not certain what’s going on. If you want to send me a short jingcast showing your setup and the issue I’ll try to duplicate it on my Windows box.

  8. Please help…all that i got is a black page, there i can hear the voice but i cant see anything..thats the url http://www.sunhedge.com/tutorials/index.php?name=2009-02-21_1256-1.mp4&width=width&height=height&autostart=true

  9. I was able to solved the issue about why i just the audio, but my question is at the parameter where must be custom video code…its must be empty or what need go over there??? at the video say that not but at the txt show a code…please help

  10. Brooks says:

@William – it looks like your link template is missing brackets:

    width=width and height=height

    When it should be setting:

    width=[width] and height=[height]

I’m a little bit confused by your question. Are you asking how to create embed code templates rather than link templates?

  11. Hello i love this tool, sadly until now i cant use it, all that i want is do the same as is at the video tutorial, but all that i get is that the paste code say: Your captures has been succesfully uploaded” …..instead here is the code for paste that yours show at the video tutorial..

Below it appear other parameter named Custom Video Code, at the Video tutorial, this guy say that there is not necessary fill it, is there where i get be confused because at the txt file say about 2 codes one for swf and other for mpeg4.
    Please Help

  14. thats weird when i copy here the code the [...] dissapear

  15. After to try and try it get works. at the tutorial the guy said that the code need be copy at the custom image,,,i put it at the custom video code and it works

  16. Brooks says:

@William – sorry for the confusion. The video tutorial was based on a version of Jing that had a bug in it. This bug caused the lower “video” text field to not work (essentially Jing was only returning the code from the “image” field). A subsequent update fixed this issue. However it requires that you add the URL code template back to the “video” field. Here’s what my current Jing URL templates looks like:

    http://www.brooksandrus.com/jing2/index.php?name=video_code.png&width=482&height=348

Hopefully that will help some of those who are being confused by the video.

  17. My POV as a new Jing Pro purchaser.

Although Jing seems very simple on the site, I have had nothing but problems with it since purchasing the Pro version at 9:30pm. It is now 3:11am and I’m pretty bummed. No luck ! I NEED help. First my wants.

    What I want :
    1. To be able to host my video’s on my own server.
    2. To be able to place videos (from a video camera) to my blog as you do on yours.

    What my problems are :
    1. I guess I can’t use Jing to FTP any of my personal video’s to my server, and if so how do I do it ?
    2. When I just create a “Jing” screencast and upload it, it’s blank, white, nothing, nada, when I click the “visual” tab in wordpress, I see a flash box/container ? but that’s it. I’m so FRUSTRATED right now.
As someone who is relitively fluent on the mac, I have to say, I’ve never had so much trouble troubleshooting something. I can’t find anything online about this, I’m pretty much ready to get a refund and just say $%@! it.

Is Jing responsible for the actual PLAYER ?, if so, why do you use Kamini ?

    Please help.

I’m using wordpress 2.7 and the “Thesis” theme. I have a powerbook dual 2.4 with 4 gigs running tiger.

Please email me direct or call 808-268-8929

    alright thanks

  18. Let me know if you was able to solved it….was me who call you on the phone.
    Regards
