Awhile back I wrote a post about using Jing’s FTP output and URL / embed templates to empower rich media blogging. Its a pretty good primer, but it apparently doesn’t go far enough–I’m still getting plenty of responses from people who just don’t grok how to setup Jing’s FTP output with their own site. To that end I’m adding a complete template of files for folks who have php on their server.
If you are in that boat, or just don’t want to expend too much effort, download the template files.
Now take the following steps
- Unzip the contents of the downloaded zip file.
- Move the jing_ftp_settings.txt to your desktop. This file contains the all the information (except your ftp server username and password) you need to support Jing and FTP output.
- Upload the rest of the files to the jing folder you created on your server.
- Open jing_ftp_settings.txt
- Open Jing preferences and click on the FTP button.
- Copy and paste the information from the jing_ftp_settings.txt to the corresponding fields in the Jing FTP Setup dialog.
- Make a few shares, paste some embed code and test things out.
If you’ve uploaded the correct files you’ll see something like this:

Some explanation of what you will see ing the jing settings document:

If you’ve correctly filled in your data in the Jing FTP Setup preferences you’ll see something like this:

That’s it. There’s nothing more to it. You can now upload content directly to your server and have Jing return URLs and embed code that points to that media. Let me know if this gets any of you a little closer to home. ;-)

Brooks, thanks so much for this — it’s a big help. Screencast.com’s bandwidth limitation for the free account is too severe for my purposes, and I’m loathe to pay for the upgraded account when I already have a webhost with unlimited storage and bandwidth, so I’m glad I found this article.
I realize that beggars can’t be choosers, but I wonder if you have any kind of solution that addresses Jing Pro’s ability to save in MP4 format? I couldn’t get this method (above) to work at first, until I realized that it only worked with SWF files.
The other odd thing is that the latest version of the Jing software doesn’t seem to have a field in the FTP setup for specifying custom SHARE code. The image and video embed code fields are still there, but not the one for the share link. Seems like a really odd omission from the software.
Anyway, thank you again for posting this. Even if I’m limited to manually updating the share link and relegated to SWF format, it’ll be a big help. (I’ll just wish I hadn’t bothered with the Pro version - LOL.)
@Jason - Help is on the way. I’m working on something that will likely be posted over at blog.jingproject.com. I’ll post when we’ve got something up live.
@Jason - Check out this post for help getting Jing MP4 files working with FTP:

Thanks for sharing this embed player. I really like the functionality.
I couldn’t find the jing_ftp_settings.txt file in your download, can you post that again?
Thanks,
iBrent
@iBrent - I’ll look around for it. What specifically from it did you need?

Thanks also,
This works great, I’m using Jing for educational purposes in the Netherlands…
Now all I need is something that will generate the embed / link code for me when I request it and will show all the flv’s I have stored (like screencast does..) .. ;)
Still this is perfect, I’ve been making flv’s for half a year now, Jing icw this makes it all the easier / more intuitive / therefore more readily usable.
Can you tell me if Jing is SCORM compliant? THANKS!
Jing doesn’t ship with SCORM compliance. It would be fairly simple to build a SCORM SCO template for Jing recordings. Can you give me a better idea of your specific needs?
