Woot! JD left a comment today on an a previous post indicating that the Adobe Flash 9 SWF Specification will be pushed live the last week of July 07.

It’s been a while coming, but I’m just geeky enough to be happy knowing I’ll be parsing that pdf within a fortnight.
Oh, and thanks JD for somehow being plugged in 24 / 7 and still remembering to follow up internally on a rather obscure blog post from a couple of months back - you are a fantastic asset to the community. :)

It’s about time…it’s been what, 18 months now since flash 9 was released? (called 8.5 at the time). They’ve open sourced the compiler before they even released the specs of the format it compiles to!
That’s from informal speech from Emmy, who was coordinating multiple groups in getting this out, and it came from face-to-face conversation end of last week. I might have gotten the details wrong, but it should be soon, that’s the gist.
I know some wanted it sooner. Anyone can use Player 9 deployed capabilities today with whichever SWF they write, but some wanted documentation on the newer abilities before it hit 90% viewership. I’d like simultaneous-ship myself, but I also see, on the inside, that many review cycles are involved, and there are at the same time many competing demands for the attention of the folks making the desktop Player.
I don’t know what assurance I could give you that we’d someday ship file spec simultaneously with each major release, but I do know that’s what each of us wishes we could achieve, if that internal background is of help.

Great news! The more and more they open up at adobe the more they will lock in their technology to last.
