After some very loud complaining, I’m happy to announce that it appears the release of the Flash 9 file format specification / license is imminent. Emmy Huang, Adobe Flash Player Product Manager, posted the following comment on my blog:
Hi,
Sorry about the SWF9 spec — it is partly my fault that I didn’t push it along faster. But, well, you know … there are always lots of balls in the air over here
The engineers did their job, but then we needed to update the EULA language with the Adobe wording and I also wanted to clean up some of the poorly worded terms. The basic structure is the same — the spec is for figuring out how to output SWFs. We are very very very close to getting it posted for you. Last steps are approval of the new license and getting through the web publication process.
cheers,
Emmy
Product Manager, Adobe Flash Player
Though I wish the spec had been released much earlier I very much appreciate JD and Emmy for listening and responding. Here’s to hoping we have the spec / license in our hands within a month. In the future it would seem appropriate for Adobe to include information about the release of the file format spec / license in their public roadmap.

Dandy news. It *may* be well timed news too for expanding on a project I’ve been on for a while. Fingers crossed.

That’s the boy. Keep ‘em flying.

The flags of discontent. It’s the only way anything ever gets changed.
For the record, here is what happened last time with Flash 8 specs… look familiar? ;)

Took a while after the promise to actually deliver. Props to JD and Emmy for working on it, but I think Adobe really needs an official policy to get, at a minimum, rough drafts of the specs out with the official release of each player.
Have you heard anything back on the spec yet?

Not a word since Emmy made the comment quoted in this post a couple of weeks ago. I’m hopeful we’ll see something in the next couple of weeks, but it wouldn’t surprise me its another 6-8 weeks. Maybe now that you’re on the inside you can dig up a bit more. :)
Haha… told you so ;)
Thanks for airing this topic on your blog Brooks !
Has anyone heard anything about an expected ETA for the Flash 9 File format specs from Adobe yet ? From Emmy’s email, it sounds like what was left was :
approval of the new license and
getting through the web publication process.
I am guessing it is still stuck in legal ?
