For those of you, like moi, who have been confined to the outer fringe–limited to sneak peaks–of updates regarding the upcoming player and IDE (Flash is apparently one hot chick when it comes to beta testing); today, is a very good day. Our first chance to taste the future has arrived in the form of the Flash Player 8 Public Beta. The new player has me drooling at the possibility of getting my hands on the updated ActionScript API’s–I’m particulary eager to play around with runtime effects and the new ECMAScript 4 xml handling capabilities. For now, I’ll have to be content on seeing just how many components I can instantiate at once before the new player gets cranky…if only I could lure Nigel Pegg out of blog retirement to chastise me for my foolishness.

Hi,
Thanks for testing the new Flash Player. It has a ton of new features. However, I can let you know that it does not have E4X. We have never sneak previewed or announced this. It is something we have let folks know we are working on, and it will be a part of the language in the future (and not the super distant future) but it is not part of Flash Player 8.
Regards,
David

Thanks, for the heads up David. To say the least, I am crushed…I had seen the accidental memo released on the flexcoders mailing list detailing this feature and had fully expected it to be incorporated this time around given all the comments I’ve read about Macromedia’s intention to become fully conformant with the ECMAScript 4 proposal. So would you care to qualify the statement that, “it will be a part of the language in the future (and not the super distant future) but it is not part of Flash Player 8.” Are you saying it won’t be intrinsic to the player, but will be available as part of the language release when the Flash IDE is released? I’m sure you’re going to dance around that one a bit, but it would be nice to know.
